The Pierson Mill in Essex County was built in 1830 by Lewis Pierson. Pierson used wood from the property to build a gristmill, and powered the turbines by building a 300 foot dam across the Rahway River. After 170 years, when the Pierson family finally had to close its doors, the property was bought by a local architect who rehabilitated the building. The preservation of this historic site contains the footprint of the original building, and now accommodates local businesses. (Photo courtesy of Preservation NJ)
At a Homes for New Jersey rally, participants call for an increase in New Jersey's affordable housing stock and a comprehensive housing policy. The Coalition is a partner to the Homes for New Jersey campaign, which received a pledge from the Governor to build and preserve 100,000 homes over the next ten years in environmentally appropriate places.
One of the greatest assets of the Pinelands is the vast number of streams and rivers that flow through the Pine Barrens. These wetlands are sustained by the vast Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifers immediately beneath the surface of the Pine Barrens, and contain over 17 trillion gallons of water. Coalition Member Camden Lutheran Housing built the RiverView Homes as a 4-story 16 unit rental development for low-income residents located at Ninth & Erie Streets in North Camden. Using a unique group of design professionals, including CLH staff and a project architect, the development uses construction materials and methods guided by PSE&G's 5 Star Energy Home Program, EPA's Energy Star Program and energy-design and building consultants. For more than 70 years, the Lighthouse Camp on Barnegat Bay was a summer retreat for the blind and handicapped. When the camp was closed, owner Lighthouse International worked with Coalition Member Trust for Public Land to protect the 90-acre site and find an alternative use for the camp's 27 buildings. The project was part of TPL's Barnegat Bay Initiative, which has so far protected more than 6,500 acres in this 450-square-mile landscape of tidal shoreline, back bay islands, marsh creeks and pine-oak forest on the New Jersey shore. Coalition Member Homeless Solutions built the Jean Street Apartments as a response to the serious lack of affordable housing for working poor families in the Morris County area. The organization also provides case management services to tenants to help them become more self-sufficient. Each unit is Energy Star rated with extra insulation, high quality windows, and other features that save on tenants' energy costs. (Photo courtesy of Homeless Solutions Inc.)
Coalition Member Morris Habitat for Humanity completely renovated this house for a Dover mother and her two sons. To ensure affordability, the home complies with COAH regulations and has a thirty-year deed restriction on resale-the home may only be sold to another qualified low-income family during this time period.
